Until We Begin Again

etched and cut copper pieces with patina

2024-current

Until We Begin Again is a ritual I began after enduring a season of grief.

Within the first six months of 2023, four significant figures in my life passed away suddenly. What followed was my first experience with compound grief, and the longest stretch of time I have lacked the capacity to make anything.

In early 2024, I began etching affirmations, realizations, dreams, questions, and truths I desperately needed to believe in into the copper scraps I had accumulated in studio. Believing that maybe the deliberate act of etching these words into metal would etch them into reality. And for the days I had no words but wanted to add to this ritual, I cut a new shape and left the copper unetched. They are imperfect, raw, and sometimes sharp in all of the ways they could be.

Until We Begin Again was born as a bridge to begin creating again, and now it is a ritual I hold dear as a way forward in those heavier times life brings and to see where we have been and where we are going.
